PSA in Zeebrugge: 2 Megavessel Hubs
PSA operates two deepsea terminals in Zeebrugge: Container Handling Zeebrugge (CHZ) and Zeebrugge International Port (ZIP):
CHZ handled over 1m TEU in 2010. It has a quay length of 1.000m and is equipped with 6 quay cranes with up to 21 rows outreach. CHZ handes 14k TEU vessels of CMA-CGM, China Shipping and UASC.
ZIP is built as Europe's Megavessel hub. It has a draft of 17m and features Europe's largest quay cranes. It offers oustanding rail access, plus an 80.000m2 on-dock Distripark for consolidation and CFS.
These terminals offer direct connections to 9 Chinese ports as well as to Vietnam, Malaysia and the Middle East. Shortsea services include Gothenburg, Bilbao, St Petersburg, many Baltic ports and the UK. PSA Zeebrugge is tied to a network of inland hubs for efficient delivery of containers in France, Belgium and Germany via barge, rail and truck.
Shipping Lines: CMA-CGM Connects Zeebrugge with St Petersburg
CMA-CGM, one of the world's largest shipping lines, has chosen the Port of Zeebrugge as a major hub in North-Europe. CMA-CGM offers an extensive network of services which connect Zeebrugge with the rest of the world.
Its weekly connection from Zeebrugge to the flourishing region of St Petersburg is an integral part of its network. With a short transit time of only 7 days and a good connection with the FAL3 service in Zeebrugge, CMA-CGM offers a direct flow of goods to Russia, both for local Belgian cargo as well as Far East transhipments. This service is operated jointly with FESCO.
Shipping Lines: UASC Chooses Zeebrugge
UASC (United Arab Shipping Company) has added Zeebrugge to its global network. With strong roots in the Middle East and the Gulf, UASC now offers another excellent connection between Zeebrugge and the Far East. It is ideal for exports from Germany, Belgium or France to South and Central China: In only 19 days, the AEC8 loop reaches Port Klang whilst to Shanghai it takes only 26 days.
UASC decided to call Zeebrugge with its largest vessel ever, the UMM Salal, with a capacity of 13.100 TEU. "Zeebrugge is the ideal hub for such large vessels" said Mr Joachim Coens, President of the Zeebrugge Port Authority MBZ, during the maiden call on 10 June 2011. "Today, 4 carriers trust us with their over-13k TEU ships. This places Zeebrugge in the top league of European ports". PSA handles 3 of these carriers at its terminal Container Handling Zeebrugge (CHZ).
Connections: Liege becomes Inland Hub for PSA Zeebrugge
PSA Zeebrugge expands its network of inland hubs to the thriving areas of Maastricht, Aachen and Liege. Containers are delivered directly from CHZ to Liege Container Terminal (LCT). This service is available 2x week by barge and offers 30-50% savings against road transport. One-way bookings are possible.
"Zeebrugge has good connections for German, Belgian and Dutch exporters. This service can take cargo off the road and generate savings for Forwarders and Shipping Lines" said Tom Paeshuys, General Manager of Liege Container Terminal.
Markets: Danone and 2XL serve UK from Zeebrugge
With up to 20 sailings per day to UK and Ireland, Zeebrugge is the ideal base to consolidate cargo flows to the UK. Many retailers and manufacturers hold their UK stock in Zeebrugge and use reliable, overnight seatransport directly to ports in Southern, Central and Northern England. This avoids congested UK roads and rail and gets products to UK consumers on-time and at a lower cost.
2XL is one of the main Zeebrugge operators in this market: With a 22,000 sqm logistics facility in Zeebrugge, 2XL delivers Danone water and many other products directly to UK retail stores. Improving efficient flows and significantly reducing carbon footprint for Volvic and Evian products has earned 2XL the Supply Chain Award 2010
